With the second term of university being over now, and everything changing next term I think it’s time to reflect on exactly what a holiday from uni is all about.

The age-old question for students everywhere, is how to balance the excitement of being home, against finishing all of the assignments that have been set during the break. Trust me I know this feeling very well. With 2 essays, 3 days of work experience, keeping this blog up to date, revision and finishing a portfolio in 5 weeks, it doesn’t appear that I’ll actually have much time to catch up with my family and friends. However, it’s all about making the time.

For example, I managed to get my first essay out the way before the end of term, with all of my exams for that term finished, I had a few spare days to make a draft. This meant I was able to start my second this week, if everything works out, both my essays will be done within the first week of my half term.

A very important aspect of having the time off is spending it with your loved ones, I have made time for social activities in the last week and have done some really exciting things. On Saturday I went out for drinks with two of my best friends. We had such a good time and a catch up was well over due. Being on the dance floor with great company is the perfect way to unwind after, what I would consider, a fairly stressful term.

On Monday, I brought my mum to campus for the first time. Due to her job she was never able to attend the open day with me, so this was the first time she’d been to Uni, and it was a really cute day. I showed her around campus, and we grabbed a coffee before heading into town. We spent hours in Colchester shopping and catching up. It was so much fun to show her my second world, and I am so glad she enjoyed herself. Hopefully the next time she comes she’ll get to meet Ruth and my other uni friends.

On Tuesday my friend Em drove down to Dunmow to see me. I showed her around the local area, and we grabbed a Toby Carvery. Em decided she wanted to go to the country park, so we headed over to Great Notley and acted like children. It was a real laugh and we spent ages just exploring. It was exactly what I needed, and it was some real quality time with a best friend.

Now I’ve had a few days rest I need to get back to essay writing. I have my work experience next Tuesday, so that gives me just under a week to complete my final essay. I look forward for what the following four weeks have in store and getting back to Soham to catch up with more of my friends.
