BACK AT THE BBC

Today I returned back to BBC Look East (west) for another day of work experience. As most of you will know, I spent some time here roughly 7 weeks ago and fortunately I was invited back during my end of term break.

Today started off rather slow honestly, however I finally got to meet Ian Kelly, who I had been in contact with for all these weeks. We spoke for ages about my goals and aspirations and he was confident that there would be enough for me to do during this ‘work experience’ day.

I spent the start of my day gathering news and contact information for the Sue Scarlett story, the Grandmother whose hand was bitten off by a 14 stone dog back in October. After gathering all the information that I could, Ian asked if I wanted to attempt to set the story up for the end of the week and obviously, I did. I reached out to Mrs Scarlett but unfortunately, I am yet to have a response from her, however when and if she does get back to me, I will be sure to pass all the information on to Ian and the team.

After lunch I headed out with Sam Read and the camera man Johnny to an address in Milton which is home to the Red Balloon charity which helps school children who have self-excluded themselves due to extreme bullying or trauma. This organisation works with local school to help children who the generic system has failed. We got to meet the staff and teachers who help these troubled teens as well as meeting a few of the children themselves.

Once the whole package was filmed, we headed back to the Cambridge studio to edit it all together ready for the 18:30 broadcast this evening. We got back to the studio at 16:00 and the whole editing process ended at 17:55, meaning our package only just made the cut. It was long but the final piece was really interesting and the whole Red Balloon experience was a real eye-opener for me.

This was it for my day at the BBC look east (west) but I have however been invited back once all my exam are over, and I intend on taking this offer on, as you can never have enough experience when it comes to this profession. I’m at BBC radio Northampton in two weeks from today, so expect to see another BBC themed post once that work experience is finished.
