The Met Gala is an event that occurs every year on the first Monday in May in New York City. The event also known as the Met Ball is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and is a costume or themed gala. Celebrities from all different background and from all over the globe are invited to attend.
Every single year attendees pull out all the stops with their costumes and fight to be named the best dressed, as the Met is one of the most reported on events in the calendar year. So, sticking to the theme is crucial and making sure you are pristine is ideal.
The event being annual, means that every year there must be a new theme for celebrities to follow for the red carpet. This has not always been without controversy. In 2015 the theme of ‘China: through the looking glass’ created a stir on social media when many fans claimed it amplified institutional racism. Another critique came back in 2014 when the White Tie theme was put into place, where media organisations argued that this was an extremely expensive theme for even celebrities to uphold.
This year however was an uncontroversial theme, as A-listers showed up in extravagant gowns and bedazzled suits to fit to the theme of ‘Camp’ accompanied by a pink carpet, to add to the atmosphere. Camp has been defined as ‘notes on fashion’, so it was everything over the top and brightly coloured. Some celebrities really stepped up to the mark to follow the dress code, including major names such as Zendaya and the Kardashian – Jenner clan. However, not everyone was comfortable with such a vibrant theme. A lot of male contributors struggled to get on-board with such a colourful concept, and still appered in a classic tuxedo.
The event itself id put on by Vouge magazine, and their editor Anna Wintour showed up in a floor length floral, pink gown accompanied by a feathered jacket. She embodied the essence of the camp theme and stilled looked flawless whilst doing so. The cover girl of vouge, during Met Monday was none other than Kim Kardashian. Kim showed up to the event in a custom made by Manfred Thierry Mugler. This was his first design in 20 years and was illustrated as “dripping wet”. His design was inspired by the wet shirtdress that Sophia Loren wore in the 1957 film Boy on a Dolphin. He captioned his Instagram post of the dress “getting out of the pacific straight to the #metgala red carpet to shine like the brightest star”.
Bloggers from all over the globe go mad for the event, giving them chance to rate and judge the outfits from head – to – toe. This years best dressed was awarded to Katy Perry, who turned up dressed as a chandelier, and changed in the bathroom into a burger costume (which is definitely eccentric, to say the least). While for the males, Jordan Roth showed up in a cape designed with a whole theatre printed onto it. Definitely not something you see on every red carpet. Many other household names showed up in beautiful, coloured, feathered costumes that stole the show.
Now that the Met magic is over, everyone will need to wait until next May 4th until they can gasp over celebrities in beautiful costumes. The ‘fashion Oscars’ is over, and bloggers can return to their usual activities. It was marvellous while it lasted.
